Meet Don Go Niang
Five years ago, Don Go Niang was selling vegetables in the local marketplace. Long days of working in the sun often yielded very little for her family. Her husband, Gin Khan Khai, was in Malaysia, working in restaurants to save money to create a better life for their family. She says it was very difficult having to bring up a young family, with three children, living in a small house with extended family. Two rooms slept 12 people
"A few years ago I didn’t know about business. Getting a loan with ZMF has changed my life."
The changes began when Do Go Niang applied for a loan through ZMF. A small loan of NZ$200 enabled her to buy a sewing machine and some materials.
Since receiving her first loan, Do Go Niang has been able to purchase four sewing machines and employ three full-time workers to meet the growing demand for her clothing. She is proud that she has been able to create a “real business” and support other women in her community.

At the end of 2015 Do Go Niang and her husband were able to build a new home that they designed themselves with enough space for their family. They are proud to be able to bring up their children in a nice house that they have been able to build because of Do Go Niang's business.
The achievements of Do Go Niang and her family over just a few years are truly remarkable. They have created a thriving family business, making beautiful traditional clothing from their new home.
“My business has brought my family closer together. My husband was able to come back from Malaysia. He makes the buttons and sews the button holes. That’s his job, and he is happy to support me!”
