ABOUT ADC

Many people in poor communities are industrious, resourceful and masters of their own destiny. What they need is access to capital and a bit of support. Our core purpose is to provide both.

We want to empower those living in poverty to improve their lives and enable transformations of households and communities, by providing access to client-focused microfinance and related services.

We believe that by supporting entrepreneurs through microfinance, entire communities can work their way out of poverty through business development.

WHAT WE DO

Picture
ADC offers micro loans to skilled, enterprising communities in Myanmar . These loans act as capital for them to start and grow small businesses. Micro loans give poorer people, who would otherwise have few or no options to access credit or financial services, the opportunity to build their own pathway out of poverty.

Microfinance allows people - particularly women who are disproportionately affected by poverty - to take on reasonable small business loans safely, and in a manner that is consistent with ethical lending practices.

Donations enable us to support almost 2,000 clients a year to improve their lives and those of their families. The more we can raise, alongside the incredibly high repayment rate, means that donated dollars are recycled; every dollar repaid is loaned out again to support another entrepreneur.

HOW WE DO IT

Picture
Through our in-country partner, ZMF, we seek new clients through two main avenues: word of mouth and through ZMF staff visiting rural communities. New clients are required to attend training and information sessions about ZMF and the financial support available. Loans are uncollaterised and only basic information is required from clients, but all lending is within small groups of people who act as co-guarantors.

Through ZMF's discrete, reliable and trusted service, loans are disbursed in cash and all are repayable in weekly or monthly installments over a 6 - or 12-month period. Clients are also required to put a small amount aside for insurance and savings. To secure additional capital, loans must be fully repaid. Ongoing mentoring is provided by ZMF staff  who are well-known and trusted within their community.

WHAT WE ACHIEVE

Since our inception in 2008, we have distributed more than $3m worth of microloans to almost 12,000 people, 92% of whom are women.

Microfinance works. Around 97% of loans are repaid in full, thanks to the training, support and group responsibility of borrowing credit. More importantly though, microfinance improves lives of enables the transformation of households and communities.

Now with the ability to build flourishing businesses, those who previously were living in a cycle of poverty and inability to increase their earnings, now have more money. This leads to improved food security, access to healthcare, improved housing, and education. The latter in particular has an intergenerational effect on communities in Myanmar.

Empowering women is of particular importance. The vast majority of our clients are women - often widowed, divorced, single or with partners working overseas. Micro loans give women of Myanmar a sense of autonomy, a voice in their community, and independence.
